At a 2pm press conference Monday Ole Miss announced that Head Football Coach Houston Nutt’s services would no longer be needed after the 2011 season. Nutt, who was in the midst of a 14 game SEC losing streak with Ole Miss, had been mired by Rebel fans for some time now just two years removed from back to back Cotton Bowl victories.
With Nutt on his way out at Ole Miss, who will be next in line to coach there? Nutt himself offered up former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach as a viable candidate Tuesday, saying he thought Leach would be a good fit in Oxford. From what I’ve seen however, most Rebel fans would tend to disagree with that. No matter who the Rebels will go after, this next few months should be interesting in Oxford. but with Archie Manning and a FedEx VP leading the Coach Search Committee and a $150 Million dollar Facilities Inniative getting underway, you have to think the sense of urgency to find a household name and well groomed Head Coach is at a high level. The question will be “will Ole Miss be able to land a household name coach?”
